Chapter 23

I pulled into the parking lot for work with ten minutes to spare. I cut that close. I was so caught up with Nox that I didn’t pay attention to what time it was. I knew I was getting too attached and too fast, but I just couldn’t help myself. When I saw him, I was drawn to him. I had to be around him. Near him. With him.

I must distance myself from him at all costs.

My shift was a blur, my mind working for and against me. One second, I’m planning an escape: how to keep myself from being alone with Nox and his cousins. And his uncle… the next, I’m remembering the way Nox’s hands felt on my body. His lips on my skin. His-

“Babe, you okay?” Silas caught my attention as I was counting my drawer.

“Huh? Oh, yea. Sorry. I’m just tired.” It was true, but I was holding a lot of information back too.

“Just finish counting and head out.”

“You feeling okay?” I joked as I looked at him.

“Ha-ha, just get going.” He snickered. “I’ll be fine. Jude is staying late since you don’t need a ride anyway.”

“You’re the best, Silas.” I pecked his cheek and grabbed my totals, and headed for Valentine.

“What?” Valentine seemed perturbed for some reason.

“I have my totals.”

“You’re leaving?” He wasn’t one to pry, but I don’t leave work early.

“If that’s okay. Silas said Jude is staying to finish up.”

“Yea, that’s fine. I do need a minute if you don’t mind.”

“Of course.” I sat down across from him.

“Did Drake approve the auction?”

“Yes. I’ll actually need to get the girls’ sizes and if they have a color preference for their dress.”

“I’ll hold a meeting on Monday.”

“Do I need to be here?”

“If you can.”

“What time?”

“Will seven work? The stage doesn’t open until eight on Mondays.” Valentine leaned back in his chair

“That’s doable. Unless Drake springs something on me, I’ll be here.”

“Just let me know if you can’t make it. But so you know, Blake will be here Monday. It’s the beginning of the month, so he’ll be checking in.”

“Okay.” It wasn’t a big deal, but I appreciated the heads-up.

“Now, get going before I put you back to work.” He grumbled.

“Night, Val. Thank you.”

“Yea, Yea.”

I smiled as I headed down the stairs. This job really wasn’t that bad. My man coworkers were caring and looked out for me, even Valentine. Silas even had a soft side he showed every now and then. Felix was always worried about me, even texting once a week to check on me. Compared to the office job, this was a breeze.

“Hey, little lamb, you headed home?”

“Yes. Silas said you were staying to help. I appreciate it.”

“You okay?” Jude could tell something was off. He could read me pretty easily.

“Not really. Nothing anyone can do to help, though.” I dug this grave. It was only getting deeper.

Jude looked up and then back down at me, I glanced back to see he was eyeing Silas. “Hey, Silas. I’m walking her out!”

“Kay, man!” Silas shouted back.
